Temporary traffic surveys
These 48-hour video snapshots, taken at over 100 different locations across Scotland, add to our overall monitoring picture by providing detailed information about all modes of road transport.
Video cameras are mounted onto telescopic masts which are placed and secured onto a suitable piece of street furniture. The cameras film at a low quality so no personal identifying information can be seen in the recording.
The process counts all modes of transport in order to establish a modal share for that site over the period of the recording.
When do the surveys happen?
Cycling Scotland undertake traffic surveys twice a year - once in May, and again in September. These surveys have been running in some locations since 2017.
What happens next?
The data is then processed, shared with local authorities directly and uploaded to the Cycling Open Data portal.
