Become an instructor
How to become a Bikeability Scotland instructor
There are two qualifications you can get to deliver Bikeability Scotland - the one-day Bikeability Scotland Instructor course for delivering levels 1 and 2, and the four-day Cycle Trainer course for delivering all three levels.
Once qualified you can take your skills and experience to the next level and complete the Bikeability Scotland Instructor Trainer course.
Can anyone become an instructor or take part in Bikeability Scotland training?
From considering the needs of all potential training course candidates to equipping instructors with the knowledge, confidence, and potential strategies they might need to deliver effective cycle training; Cycling Scotland is committed to making the Bikeability Scotland training programme as inclusive as possible.
Bikeability Scotland Instructor
A one-day course, delivered over two half days, that enables you to deliver Bikeability Scotland levels 1 and 2.
During the course, you will learn how to plan, prepare, deliver, and conclude training sessions, including dynamic risk assessments of playground and on-road training locations.
Once you have completed the training you will be able to deliver sessions independently (or with other instructors where class ratios demand), sometimes with support during the first few sessions, but moving to remote supervision once you feel confident in the role.
Prerequisites: You should ideally be a competent bike rider and must be a minimum of 16 years old, or 18 when working independently.
Cycle Trainer
A four-day course that allows you to deliver all 3 levels of Bikeability Scotland, as well as any course that teaches the National Standard for cycle training. Cycle Trainers can conduct static risk assessments on cycling routes and training venues.
Prerequisites: You should be fully competent on a bike and have experience of riding on busy roads.
Bikeability Scotland Instructor Trainer
The two-day course enables you to deliver the Bikeability Scotland Instructor course. You will take on the role of an Instructor Trainer and be shown how to use the Cycling Scotland database so that you can add classes, register participants and issue certificates. This course includes familiarisation with the BSI course and materials along with valuable teaching techniques.
Prerequisites: You must be qualified to Cycle Trainer level and have experience delivering Bikeability Scotland training.
Child protection and safeguarding
Cycling Scotland advises local authorities and Bikeability Scotland delivery organisations who are working with children that they must have sound and rigorous child protection and safeguarding policies in place. Local authorities and Bikeability Scotland delivery organisations must ensure that all those involved in delivering Bikeability Scotland training are aware of this.
Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) checks must be undertaken if detailed in the child protection and safeguarding policy. Cycling Scotland also has a child protection policy in place.
