Family cycle training

Bike riding as a family is a fun, healthy activity that can also help children develop important skills such as communication, teamwork, and road safety awareness.

Why is family cycle training important?

Cycling Scotland recognise that the transition from solo rider to being an adult coordinating a family cycle can feel like a significant undertaking and so we have developed training to help build cycle skills and confidence as a family group.

We encourage the whole family to attend the training so that the experience is a shared one and all members of the family feel included, and their needs considered.

Who is the training for?

Designed to help families cycle together with more confidence, this session is aimed at parents and carers cycling with their children. The focus of the training is to equip the whole family with the skills and confidence to cycle together safely as a group.

Family Cargo Bike training

For many families, a cargo bike offers a practical way to transport children and their luggage over short distances, particularly in urban areas.

If you are interested in using a cargo bike for the nursery run and beyond, we run a version of our popular Cargo Bike Training course for families.

The 3-hour introductory course includes basic bike and equipment checks before focusing on the unique riding characteristics of the cargo bike, including the differences between riding with and without cargo. Training takes place in traffic-free and on-road environments.

When contacting a training provider, just let them know that you will be transporting kids and not cargo.

Bike provision

If you have access to a cargo bike, please bring it to the session as it will enable the trainer to understand the specific requirements of the type of cargo bike you are operating with.

If this isn’t possible, trainers may be able to provide access to cargo bikes during the course. Please enquire at the time of booking.
