Galt Transport is a family owned and operated haulage company based in central Scotland with a mixed fleet of over 50 trucks and 100 trailers at four operating centres.
Drivers are out on the road across Scotland seven days a week, and the company faced the challenge of coordinating training in line with driver availability and location.
The company was keen to upgrade their Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) accreditation to ‘Silver’ level and train its entire workforce in On-Cycle Road User Awareness Training,
Discussions began in 2019 and within five months, after exploring different options, Cycling Scotland had delivered both theory and practical courses for the majority of the workforce.
Now, in 2025, Galt continues to work with Cycling Scotland to refresh drivers’ training in the current five-year cycle of Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
Linda Galt, Company Director, highlighted Cycling Scotland’s flexible approach to their training needs, as well as on-site delivery, as factors in ensuring the training was rolled out smoothly.
Following the training our drivers immediately demonstrated a greater appreciation and improved attitude towards people who cycle.
Benefits of Road User Awareness Training:
Considering the benefits of the training, Linda said, “following the training our drivers immediately demonstrated a greater appreciation and improved attitude towards people who cycle”. Drivers also reported being more motivated to get out on their bikes in their spare time, often with their children.
Longer-term, Galt Transport has benefited from Cycling Scotland’s approach to training provision, with flexibility regarding driver availability the key. Prior to the training, no road traffic incidents with Galt drivers involving at-risk road users had been reported, and this continues to be the case.
Ian Medhurst, a Class 1 HGV driver at Galt Transport, who attended the training said, “I thought the course was really useful to help put you in the shoes of vulnerable road users and cyclists specifically. It gives you a very different perspective being on two wheels when you're so used to being high up in the safety of your truck.”
Summing up the impact of the training, Linda added, “As a company we appreciated the approach to the training, candidates were encouraged to join the discussion which was open and honest and sometimes quite lively! The content was engaging enough to ensure they now have a greater appreciation of vulnerable road users and had the added benefit of contributing to Drivers’ CPC hours and allowing us to achieve our FORS Silver award.”
