Highlights from the past year include:

  • A record number of local authorities delivered on-road Bikeability Scotland cycle training in every primary school in their area.
  • More than 10,000 nursery-aged children started their cycling journey through Play on Pedals sessions.
  • 4,000 adults took part in cycle training
  • Monitoring of cycling rates across Scotland showed a record cycling modal share of 15% along a landmark cycle route.
  • Projects were delivered for five Regional Transport Partnerships, supporting the People & Place programme, to deliver eight Access to Bikes projects, distributing more than 3,500 bikes, and helping tackle transport poverty in many areas of Scotland.
  • Partnerships with Nestrans, SPT, SEStran, SWestran and Tactran through People and Place Programmes to engage and support 212 organisations in achieving the Cycling Friendly award, including 66 primary schools and 31 secondary schools.
  • More than 100 new installations or improvements of cycle parking and storage units for schools, community groups, local authorities and social housing providers.
  • Research into road safety, which included our analysis of Scottish road safety sentencing data, finding that over 40% of drivers responsible for fatal crashes in 2015-20 had a previous driving conviction, and only 2% of people convicted of causing death by dangerous driving have been banned for more than 10 years.
  • Transport Planning & Engineering delivered four construction projects in 2024-25, including rural active travel and urban design projects helping more people to enjoy cycling and walking.

Improving accessibility

For the first time, and in line with best practice for accessibility, our annual report is being published as an HTML version. This means that content is easier to find, adaptable for the needs of the reader and different devices.

A printer-friendly version is also available.

Reflections

Introducing the report, are joint words from our Chief Executive, Keith Irving, and Chair, Professor Sally Wyke, where they reflect that, against a challenging year, there continues to be real progress to support more people to cycle for everyday journeys.

Lastly, and sadly, 2024 will forever be the year we lost our friend and colleague, Rachael Bonds, who died in October after a sudden illness. She is deeply missed.
