Cycle storage and parking guidance

Cycle parking is distinct from cycle storage as it is a facility to securely lock a bike for a short duration and is not secure. Convenient public realm cycle parking is essential to encourage more everyday journeys by bike.

Covered cycle parking

Covered cycle parking provides protection from the weather and is commonly found at transport interchanges such as bus and train stations. Care should be taken when locating covered cycle parking as when sited inappropriately it can be misused as a smoking shelter and can encourage antisocial behaviour.

Uncovered cycle parking

This is the simplest form of cycle parking or storage facility and is best suited in the public realm. Sheffield stands are the recommended solution for uncovered cycle parking as they provide convenient locking positions to secure a broad range of bikes. Cycle racks that support a bike by the wheel should be avoided as these do not offer secure locking points.
