Cycle storage and parking guidance
Cycle storage is a safe facility to lock a bike for a longer duration, including overnight and should be secure.
Considerations
Covered: provides protection from the weather
Secure: provides protection from theft and vandalism
Safe: people do not feel vulnerable or at risk when using the facility
Convenient: is located within the home or building or if it is an external facility it is located at or near the entrance.
Accessible: can be easily accessed and does not require users to carry or lift bikes, navigate stairs or other obstacles.
Inclusive: considers the differing needs of potential users.
Storage types
Walk-in cycle storage
- Large walk-in cycle storage facilities provide secure cycle storage for a large number of bikes and are often the most cost-effective solution where secure storage for over 10 bikes is required.
- Where storage for over 20 bikes is required we recommend using two-tier bike racks. Large walk-in facilities are ideal for large employers or residential properties such as high rise flats.

Cycle Hangar
- There are many companies that produce hangar style cycle storage. These typically store up to six bikes and are supplied prebuilt.
- These are commonly used for on-street cycle storage schemes, residential cycle storage and small to medium employers where space is available. These can be provided with charging facilities.

Lockers
- Cycle lockers provide secure storage for one or two bikes and are suitable for domestic cycle storage or small employers where internal storage space is not available.

Internal cycle storage
- Where space is available internal cycle storage is the preferred cycle storage solution as it is often the most secure and convenient cycle storage solution for users.
